In 1996 Verity began painting the Portal's upper tier of statues, reaching back to the earliest 13th century Gothic traditions:"I take the mineral crystals that are mentioned in the Book of Revelation -- chrysoprase, malachite, beryl -- and work them into pigments to paint the figures.
