In 1983 I began a project to retrace
and research the journey of John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood
as described in their 1843 Incidents of Travel in Yucatan, and to
photograph from the same vantage point the sites drawn by Catherwood as
they stand today. Some of the results of that project are presented here.
You are encouraged to revisit this site frequently, since it is a work
in progress. New photographs and other materials will be added on a regular,
ongoing basis. As it evolves you will find an interactive map; facsimiles
of historical documents relating to the expeditions; site maps and building
plans; additional commentary on sites and structures; and a bibliography
and list of relevent links. With this site as a guide the modern armchair
traveler can retrace and research the steps of "the peripatetic Mr.
Stephens" and his friend, "the Yankified English artist,"
Frederick Catherwood.
