My son watches very little television. His room is filled with
toys, posters and books that reflect peaceful images of childhood. Toy
guns are not encouraged. However, one day (age 4) he picked up a "Ghostbuster" gun that was
in his
hand-me-down toy collection. He wanted me to photograph him holding the
gun. From that point on, he began to create characters on his own -
all "superheroes", with
names like "Master of the World", "Boxing Beast", and "Spike Man". He
would go to great lengths to describe who they were
and what they thought about. The conflict between good-guys
and bad-guys informed each new persona.
